Dreamy 70’s Vintage Coats and Where To Find Them

I’ve just realised the title of this post sounds much like Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them; unintentional Harry Potter pun. That being said, this vintage 70’s beaut is something of a fantastic beast.

I adore vintage fashion and Sparrowhawk, my local vintage shop, is an absolute goldmine. The amount of gorgeous clothes and one-off pieces I’ve found I there is insane. In fact, it’s another blog post entirely.

I was supposed to be on a no-spend month in April, by only paying for necessities. I’ve had to renew my passport and pay a deposit for a trip to New York, so that’s gone out of the window. When I spotted this coat on a rail in the back room, I tried it on and fell in love.

Coat – Sparrowhawk

Shirt – Next

Skirt – New Look

Bag – River Island

Shoes – Topshop

The coat is a 70’s St. Michael’s number, which was formerly Marks and Spencer’s high end brand, so you can imagine the quality. It’s also 100% wool, is heavyweight and seems like new. It still has the stiffness in the sleeves and it looks pristine both inside and out.

The pea-coat style is lighter and a little shorter than my winter coat, making it perfect for the transitional seasons of Spring and Autumn. It’s a lot smarter than some of my other coats too, so would make a great coat to turn up to an interview in!

With fast fashion being rife on the high street, it’s difficult to find good quality clothes for less money. Clothes just aren’t made like they used to be because trends change so quickly. It’s instantly recognisable that this coat is well made and sturdy, and quality clothing is so important when it’s pieces that you want to last.

I paid £13.50, yup, you read that right girl; £13.50 for a coat that would retail at around £150-200 today. That’s the beauty of vintage shops – there is always a beautiful bargain to be found hiding on the rails.

Despite the label saying size 14, it fits more like a size 10, which is perfect for me (must be fate).

I suggest you run (yes run) to your local vintage shop and hunt out the hidden gems. Whether it’s a funky new blouse or a pair of denim Levis, you will find something made for you.

Beautiful wool tailored clothing, back then when you could buy Pendleton Wool for $3 per yard. Always made at least two trip to the Pendleton Wool Mills every year back in the 70’s. Polar Fleece made from recycle plastic replaced wool , and now we have a plastic bottle problem.
