How I became Stranger Things’ Eleven for Halloween without spending a penny

Halloween can become a costly event if you aren’t careful. There’s only so many times I can get away with re-wearing my Supergirl costume that first surfaced in 2013.

This year I hadn’t planned on dressing up for Halloween, but as events grew closer, so did my FOMO. *Side note for Mum, FOMO means Fear of missing out.

So, two nights before I was set to head to The Upside Down, a Stranger Things inspired event at The Underground, I lay in bed wondering what the hell was in my wardrobe that I could pull together to make a costume.

Alas, the zero-cost Eleven costume.

You will need:

A white shirt/blouse

This is a must have for any woman’s wardrobe, as they are versatile and can be worn with anything Perfect for work, drinks, days out – you name it. If you don’t own one, I recommend investing in one. This one is from Next and I’ve had it a good few years and it has served me well.

A pink dress/pinafore

This pinny is from ASOS two winters ago, and whilst it may not get as much wear as I had planned when I ordered it, it was perfect for my Halloween costume. The dress Eleven wears in the series is slightly more pink, whereas this is a bit more dusky. Hers is also a higher neckline, but hey, it’s Halloween and I had less than 48 hours to prep, okay.

A blue jacket

Initially, I was going to wear my blue denim jacket. However, Eleven’s jacked is more of a bomber/Harrington style, so I raided Jake’s wardrobe for his navy Harrington jacket. This one is from the men’s section in Primark, so even if you don’t have one you can pick on up pretty cheap.

White converse and varsity style socks

In the series, Eleven wears white high topped converse style trainers along with ankle length tube socks with stripes on them. I wore my low white converse with the most similar socks I could find in my drawer, courtesy of Anya a couple of Christmas’ ago!

An empty cereal box and a print-off

Eleven is known for her love of Eggo’s, a tasty American waffle snack made by Kellogg’s. Since I can’t get hold of a real pack, I got my mum to print off the front of a box, which I stuck to an empty cereal box. I know, I know, the Eggo’s in Stranger Things are horizontal boxes not vertical. But I asked my mum Friday morning to print this and she had no idea what was going on and genuinely thought I would be shaving my head for the costume. I had about five minutes to make the Eggo’s box with double sided tape before rushing out of the house.

Since Eleven is only young, my makeup was minimal!

Halloween can become so expensive when you consider in factors like outfit, special makeup for costumes but i think its even better when you already have the outfit!
