With University over for Christmas, and only one more shift left at work before the big day, I decided to take a much needed week (and a bit) off to actually relax. Relax – there’s a word I don’t use very often. I’m very much a go-go-go person that can’t just sit and be, even on my day’s off I’m doing something.
I was finding myself forcing content and posting photos on Instagram with little thought going into them. I decided to take a step back, chill out, not plan any content unless it just came to me. Instead, I decided to indulge in some much needed self-care to make me feel fresh and ready for my 21st birthday and Christmas.
My hair usually gets cut twice a year – summer and winter. Usually, just before Jake’s birthday, and just before my own. In summer, my sister cut my hair slightly shorter than I normally would, but I loved it. I had about 6 inches off and my hair felt so much thicker and healthier. This time, I only needed about two inches off, as my hair hadn’t really grown that much since July. Having slightly shorter hair knocks drying time off, makes it easier to style and is, in general, more manageable.
On Tuesday I got myself booked in at the Benefit Brow Bar in Debenhams at intu Potteries. I’ve been going to Benefit to fix my brows for almost two years now, and I love it. A lot of people don’t know, but if you have a Debenhams beauty card, you can get a free brow wax at Benefit within four weeks of your birthday! How can you turn that down? The lovely Levi waxed and shaped my unruly brows and then touched me up with some concealer and Gimme Brow. Nothing makes me feel more like a new woman than a brow wax. I also picked up some last minute Christmas presents at intu, which (I think) concluded my gift buying, and treated myself to a Bratwurst in the Christmas markets.
Happy hump day! On Wednesday I headed into town to run some errands, post some bits and pick up some baking ingredients. I spent the afternoon baking these delicious salted caramel Christmas shortbreads before watching the Christmas special of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. You can try the super easy recipe for the shortbread here.
Thursday was just a big lazy pyjama day. Phoebe, Frank and I got all cosy and put Netflix on. Some of you may be shocked when I tell you that I had never seen Love actually or The Holiday (eek!). I decided to watch both after one another, and baked some extra shortbread with the dough left over from Wednesday. After those, I watched the new Christmas movie, The Christmas Chronicles, starring Kurt Russell, after it was recommended by my parents, who watched it without me (I’m not bitter…).
Over the weekend I had bought some false nails to wear for my birthday, so after about an hour of trawling through various nail design hashtags on instagram, I finally had enough inspo to have a go myself. Here’s a life hack for y’all. I stick my false nails to an orange stick using blue tack, and then paint the nails with the chosen designs. Then I leave them stood in a glass to dry overnight. This stops the nails getting any hair marks, finger prints or chips and they are completely dry the next day ready to stick on!
On Friday I had a major pamper day. I used my Lush ‘Melting Marshmallow Moment’ bath oil in the bath, which smells just like Snow Fairy. I also put some of the Bleach London Awkward Peach colour on my hair to give it a nice peachy glow for the Christmas period. To finish my little self-care day I glued on my pre-painted false nails and used my Soap and Glory face mask from my Bubble Act set. It made the world of difference to my skin, making it feel fresh, plump and super smooth.
My birthdayyyy! I had a really chilled day on my birthday – lots of cups of tea and snuggling on the sofa with the doggos. I’m hoping to do a separate post on what I got for my birthday/Christmas where you can see more of what I was spoilt rotten with. I asked for ‘experiences’ for my 21st, so that I can have things to look forward to and make memories from them.
In the evening we went out for tea with some of the family, and then off out to Rumba for a few extra drinks with Jake and some friends!
I have a love/hate relationship with working in retail at Christmas time. I love it because everything is super festive and cute and everyone* (almost everyone*) is cheery and happy. On the other hand, I hate it because the weekend before Christmas is carnage. Let’s just say that when Jake’s friends invited us to the pub, I couldn’t get into the car quick enough.
When I got home I wrapped the final few gifts and poured myself a gin (a large one). You can certainly tell the presents I wrapped first for this post, compared to the ones I wrapped closer to Christmas!
Christmas Eve!! Eek! Christmas really has creeped up on me so fast! Today did a quick morning shift at work before heading over to Ten Green Bottles for a mulled gin with Jake. Then I headed home to attempt to make my own mulled wine, which I will hopefully blog about, should it not end in disaster with my head in the slow cooker! Then I’ll be using my new Lush Candy Cane bubble bar in the bath before using a warming eye mask to help me drift off for when Santa comes!
I hope you all have an amazing Christmas and take the time off you need and deserve. Spend your time with the ones you love and eat cheese and drink gin to your hearts content. Merry Christmas and thank you all for sticking around on this little website for two and a half years!
