A longline mac is one of those wardrobe staples that never, ever goes out of style. Season after season, it holds its place as the ultimate throw-on-and-go coat that is entirely effortless but undeniably chic, making even the most casual outfit look instantly pulled together.
I’d been hunting down a vintage Burberry but was struggling to find one just right. Thanks to having a former cobbler as a father who exclusively buys leather or cotton garments, I’m a big believer that you should invest in your outerwear, especially in classic silhouettes like trenches and macs. However, I recently broke my own rule after coming across a khaki longline mac that was exactly what I’d been looking for at a fraction of the price, without compromising on style or quality.

When I shared the coat on Instagram, friends and followers tried to guess where it was from, commenting: “It’s giving Damson Madder,” “Aligne?” and “No way, Looks like a Sezane coat.” When I revealed how much it cost and where it was from, there was genuine disbelief.
At just £36 from Primark, this mac is proof that a coat doesn’t have to cost hundreds to have that timeless, premium feel. While it is made from polyester with a cotton blend in the lining, it’s still got a structured feel and weight to it without being too heavy for year-round styling.
It boasts a collared neckline, sleek button-front fastening that works both open and closed, and a stunning contrasting lining that peeks out when the cuffs are rolled or the jacket is unbuttoned. The khaki tone is endlessly versatile, playing well with neutrals, patterns, and even brighter shades, and the longline cut is the perfect length.
Already I’ve found myself reaching for it when heading out to the pub or coffee shop, or dropping Vinted parcels down at the shop. One of my favourite stylings has been with my ecru wide-leg jeans from M&S and chocolate brown ASOS T-shirt for an earthy, relaxed base. My SL72 trainers tie in all of the muted, autumnal tones while my leopard crossbody (Matalan) adds a pop of personality. I completed the look with a TBCo neck scarf and a Primark baseball cap that aptly reads ‘add to cart’.

A staple in your every season outerwear collection, a longline mac will see you through spring, summer and beyond, and there’s no shortage of them on the high street or when looking at higher end brands, too. Sezane’s Clyde Coat, for example, is a standout piece (I’m still coveting the gingham version), but clocks in at £275.
Next offers a version with a checked lining and contrast collar for £82, and Damson Madder’s Camille Trench, which has leopard print lining (yes, I’m obsessed) costs £125. All three of these alternatives are beautiful coats in their own right, not to mention are made of higher quality fabrics, but it’s satisfying to know my under-£40 find can stand proudly beside them and from a distance, would struggle to tell the difference. As for its longevity, I bought a faux leather chocolate trench from the retailer in 2023 and it’s still going strong – not to mention the fact it’s one of my most-complimented pieces.
A longline mac will always be a wardrobe hero, but finding one that looks high-end, feels timeless, and leaves enough in the budget for the rest of your outfit? That’s my kind of fashion find. Check out the Primark coat for Click & Collect or store availability here.
