Skin tints are becoming an increasingly popular substitute to full-coverage foundation in 2024 as beauty trends shift towards a more natural, skin-focused approach. With a growing emphasis on achieving a healthy, radiant complexion rather than masking imperfections, skin tints offer a lightweight alternative that enhances the skin, while providing hydration through active ingredient-based formulas.
While I’ve very much been enjoying the affordable yet effective Revolution Skin Silk Serum Foundation this year, I’d been on the hunt for something that felt a little more premium, without being too heavy. And it was during an appointment at the Selfridges Beauty Concierge that I was introduced to the Veil Hydrating Skin Tint from Hourglass.
This 35ml skin tint is priced at £49, very much falling into the ‘high end’ category of makeup. That said, base products are an area of my cosmetics collection where I’m happy to invest in more expensive formulas. And with Hourglass, not only do you get luxurious packaging, but a seriously high performing product, too. There are 18 shades to choose from, and I wear the neutral-undertone shade 3 for fair skin, which was shade-matched for me at Selfridges by one of their makeup artists.
Hourglass has packed some incredible skincare benefits into this formula, including complexion-loving ingredients like meadowfoam seed oil, hyaluronic acid, and plant-based squalane, which work to deeply hydrate and plump the skin while strengthening the skin’s moisture barrier. It’s also enriched with a naturally derived rambutan blend, all of which work to instantly boost my skin’s moisture levels (by up to 52%, according to the brand).
The texture of this skin tint is a dream – it’s lightweight and melts seamlessly into the skin, leaving a dewy, hydrated finish that lasts all day. It’s a really sheer finish which is just enough to provide an even skin tone and diffuse imperfections to give that ‘your skin but better’ finish, perfect for those days when I want a “no makeup” makeup look. But for those who do want something a little more substantial, it’s also buildable and works well alongside concealer to help tackle any blemishes or spots needing more attention.
In my late twenties, I’ve definitely favoured a dewy or satin finish over mattes, and this skin tint delivers just the right amount of radiance and glow – but what impresses me the most is how comfortable it feels. It’s a godsend for dry skin types or for anyone wanting that fresh, plump complexion as it keeps everything balanced without clinging to any dry areas or settling into fine lines – leaving my skin feeling hydrated, but never greasy. Plus, it’s completely cruelty-free, with 94% naturally-derived ingredients, making it a more sustainable option, too.
If you’re on the hunt for a luxurious, skincare-infused base that enhances your skin rather than covering it, Hourglass Veil Hydrating Skin Tint is well worth considering. Fusing lightweight, comfortable wear with high-performing ingredients and seamless coverage, there’s no wonder it’s earned a permanent place in my makeup routine for the days I want to feel glam without reaching for full-coverage. The natural, glowy finish is unbeatable, it feels so good on the skin and I’ve gotten so many compliments while wearing it. While it’s on the sheer side, the buildable formula and added skincare benefits make it worth every penny.
